Kevin Middleton is a construction worker on Adamante Limes. He does not overthink the job. He still calls the place Hell, and he is right.

Edelaine brought a paper book, which Kevin thinks will be destroyed here, same as a snowball. He mocks talk of another dimension and of a sunset. The beings around the site remind him of his uncle George. He thinks Tiffany is getting friendly with them, and that she is not all there. His own escort is an ethereal light-being. He calls her Lightning McQueen, Mr. Ball Lightning, and Her Ladyship. They are being watched, and she will not float out of the construction zone.

About two weeks in, at least the air is cleaner than the stink from Mercury's musty tanks, fine without a mask, a little sulfurous. • He cannot tell Tuesday from Wednesday. For about two weeks the crew has worked in one continuous sunset, with no day and no night.
• Lightning McQueen is Kevin's nickname for an ethereal light-being, the same kind Tiffany writes about. The name nods to Lightning McQueen in Pixar's Cars.
• Mr. Ball Lightning is another nickname for that being. If she is struck, or even touched, as on the turbine lift, she runs current into the material and melts it. If the Slayer fires a shotgun into her, she throws lightning.
• Her Ladyship is his jab at the same escort, the one that will not float out of the build zone.
