Main Differences
Where Mercury Rising’s fan setting diverges from a straight reading of official DOOM lore — characters first, then how story is delivered through collectibles.
The Enhanced DOOM Universe is not a claim that official games are “wrong”. It is a fan bridge: one solar system, one Hell as nexus, and room for Doom 3, DOOM (2016), Eternal, and even Dark Ages textures to coexist without erasing each other. That bridge needs deliberate differences.
Familiar faces, other sides
Several characters players already know will appear — but not only as the versions locked in by later games. Mercury Rising is set in 2141, before Doom 3 and DOOM (2016), so these people still have room to show other sides of themselves.
- Malcolm Betruger (Doom 3) — not only the catastrophe-era scientist. Earlier choices, politics, and relationships can surface while he is still human and still operating inside the UAC machine.
- Samuel Hayden (2016 / Eternal) — still on a path toward Argent and institutional power, but seen from a moment when Mercury and Mars both matter to the corporation’s board game.
- VEGA — more than a finished facility AI. The campaign can explore earlier roles, partial systems, and questions that later titles answer only in hindsight (including beats teased by maps like Am I Vega?).
Expect clashes of viewpoint: Hell as shortcut, Hell as energy source, Hell as ancient dimension — each faction “correct” in its own frame. More differences (locations, tech, cult politics) will land here as chapters lock.
Collectibles — how lore reaches the player
SnapMap offers MESSAGE, TRANSMISSION MESSAGE, and DATAPAD MESSAGE. Long lore leans on datapads for memory cost. Collectibles from 2016 return — with jobs retuned for a prequel that needs to tell a lot without forcing every player to read everything.
PDAs
Back in the spotlight (classic Doom 3 energy). Optional. Usually a specific UAC person speaking — personnel threads, not mandatory progression.
Books
Same pickup → message window pattern, but focused on environments: the map, Mercury, places and atmospheres.
Dossiers
Military / UAC operations reading. Optional intel for players who want the war-room layer.
Praetor Tokens
Not suit upgrades. Tokens found on red soldiers hide UAC operations lore instead — story currency, not build crafting.
Minifigures
Characters sit in three tiers (minor / noteworthy / main). Figures unlock extra background on the mid and main tiers; usually hidden secrets with the familiar find sound.
Field Drones & Demon Runes
Drones are rare messengers (often from TheMercurian / in-universe delivery). Demon Runes transform the player when the story needs it — never decoration-only.
Other odd pickups (teapot, wrench, and friends) stay optional flavour. Mandatory collects are rare and marked as Points of Interest when they matter.
